i've been trying to find out how to change the wallpaper on a sony vaio notebook but i can't ... is it not possible to do so, or does it just not allow us to do it on this notebook?

What is version of your Windows 7?
If it is Starter, you cannot change background image on your desktop.
For Home, Professional and Ultimate version right-click at free space on desktop and choose Personalize then under Themes select your background image.
