How do I change the wallpaper of the Windows Vista Login screen?

Is it possible? Do I need to download anything? If so, what? How do I change the wallpaper of the Windows Vista Login screen?
You'll need a resource file viewer/editor to do this. The login screen images are located in the imageres.dll, which is located in the system32 folder.

http://www.heaventools.com/overview.htm - PE Explorer, trialware resource editor.

http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/ - Resource Hacker, freeware resource editor.

Once you have a resource editor, open up the file, and navigate to its IMAGE folder. There you will find the images for all sorts of resolutions. You only have to replace the image for your resolution. If you're unsure which is which, just replace all of them, and be sure to create a backup of the file before saving.

In order to save changes, you'll need to take ownership of the file first:

- open up your command prompt (run as administrator)

- type takeown /f c:\windows\system32\imageres.dll

- rename imageres.dll to something like imageres.dll.old

- save the new file as imageres.dll and reboot

You should now have a working logon screen with your new background.

If you don't want to do it the manual way, you can get a hold of LogonStudio Vista, which is a utility that'll let you conveniently change the logon screen on the fly, and it'll do everything for you. All you have to do is choose a background, and it'll do the rest. http://www.stardock.com/products/logonst

Hope this helps, enjoy your new background. How do I change the wallpaper of the Windows Vista Login screen?

Go to the main screen. Press the right side of your mouse then go to Properties. Then go to the tab that says Themes. When you purchase your computer, it gives you default wallpapers. You can get new ones by going to Google Images and right clicking the picture and pressing Save Picture As. Save the picture. When you want to open up the picture. For Themes, go to browse and choose that picture.
